Even as the termination of the Senior Resident, Pulmonary Medicine at Indira Gandhi Medical College Shimla, following a physical scuffle with a patient, has led to a statewide reaction by doctors, who went on a one-day mass casual leave on Friday while ensuring that emergency services continued, the Resident  Doctors Association and senior doctors of IGMC met Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

Their primary demands included the revocation of the Senior Resident’s termination orders and action against the patient’s attendant who threatened the Senior Resident with dire consequences.

The IGMC doctors also demanded the installation of CCTVs in the hospital and proper protection of the doctors, objecting to the entry of over a hundred people inside the hospital and the creation of a mob-like situation against the doctors in IGMC after the incident of the scuffle on December 22.

According to the President, RDA, IGMC, Shimla, the Chief Minister has assured the doctors of a second inquiry into the matter. “We will discuss this with the Resident Doctors Associations of all the Government Medical Colleges in Himachal Pradesh and will come back with a statement on our future course by evening,” the RDA President said.

The RDA, IGMC, who are getting support from all the doctors in the state, including those working with the state health department, had mentioned yesterday that if their demand to revoke the termination of the SR, Pulmonary Medicine, was not met within 24 hours, they would go for a statewide strike and shut down the emergency services also.

The government has invited sharp reaction and criticism from the doctors and different sections of people for terminating the Senior Resident hastily based on a one-day inquiry, which had held both the patient and the doctor responsible for the clash. However, no action has so far been taken against the patient, and the police have not even registered the cross FIR of the Resident Doctor, who had sent it online the same day.
