A 21-year-old IIT Delhi student, identified as Kumar Yash, was found dead in his hostel room in an apparent case of suicide, police confirmed on Wednesday.
Yash, a second-year M.Sc. student from Deoghar, Jharkhand, had been receiving psychiatric treatment and had visited the IIT hospital the day before his death.
No suicide note was discovered at the scene.
The tragic incident was reported around 11 p.m. on Tuesday from Room D57 of the Aravali Hostel. Police were immediately notified and dispatched a team to the location.
Since the door was locked from inside, one of Yash's friends, along with IIT staff, had to break a window to gain access to the room.
Upon entry, police found Yash hanging from the ceiling fan using two towels. His friend and staff members brought him down and rushed him to Safdarjung
Hospital in the institute's ambulance, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Yash's body has been placed in the mortuary, and his family has been informed of the incident.
A senior police officer stated, "He was undergoing psychiatric treatment and had a scheduled appointment with a psychiatrist on October 29. Based on statements from his friends, no foul play is suspected at this stage." The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
