IIT Guwahati has rolled out the Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan initiative in Meghalaya, aimed at advancing (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) STEM education and fostering innovation across the state.

The project, implemented under the Ministry of Education and Research, is in collaboration with Samagra Shiksha Meghalaya.

The initiative aims to foster a culture of scientific inquiry and technological innovation among students in the state.

As part of the initiative, IIT Guwahati has established 50 tinkering labs in secondary schools and distributed robotic kits to 750 schools across Meghalaya.

Dedicated science and mathematics clubs have also been set up in schools to encourage students to explore these subjects beyond the classroom.

The initiative includes educational trips like Meghquest, school mentoring programs, quiz competitions, and the provision of school kits.

Professor Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, highthe institute's commitment to enhancing the educational experience in Meghalaya.

“We are dedicated to using our resources and expertise to enhance the educational experience in Meghalaya, ensuring that both students and teachers have access to the best tools and methodologies. By providing cutting-edge equipment, comprehensive training, and continuous support, we aim to create an environment where learning is interactive, engaging, and effective,” he said.

He further mentioned, “We believe that through these initiatives, we can significantly impact the quality of education in Meghalaya and set a precedent for educational excellence in the entire Northeast region.”

The initiative has already reached 50,000 students across 2,200 schools, focusing on creating an immersive learning environment.

To support the establishment of 50 tinkering labs, 70 teachers were trained, positively impacting 2,500 students.

A five-day residential training program was also conducted, featuring 30-40 hands-on sessions in coding, robotics, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), and soft skills.

The Meghquest excursion saw participation from over 4,000 students from 2,000 schools, who visited IIT Guwahati in batches.

The students received kits containing a T-shirt, stationery, and an activity calendar, and participated in 10 events spanning technology and sports.

Additionally, a two-day school mentoring program focused on science and mathematics, Olympiads, and quiz competitions were organized to further stimulate student interest in these fields.

IIT Guwahati, the only IIT in the Northeast, had previously carried out similar projects in Assam.

The launch of the Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan in Assam included establishing tinkering labs, preparing activity calendars, and commencing online registration.
