A third-year BTech student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati was found dead on the institute campus on Sunday afternoon, with police suspecting that he may have died after falling from a building.
The deceased has been identified as Ritesh Raj Singh, a Computer Science and Engineering student and a resident of Brahmaputra Hostel. He was from Odisha.
According to officials, the incident occurred around 2:30 pm on July 26, when Singh allegedly fell from the fifth floor of the institute's academic building. He was later found unresponsive within the academic complex.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials said all possible angles were being examined, and suicide had not been ruled out. "The exact cause of death will be determined following the completion of the investigation and post-mortem examination," a police officer said.
Sources said Singh was regarded as a bright student with a strong academic record. He had recently secured an internship with global investment banking firm Goldman Sachs.
Expressing grief over the student's death, IIT Guwahati Director Devendra Jalihal conveyed his condolences to Singh's family in an email to the institute community. He described the incident as a profound loss for the IIT Guwahati family and said the institute was in touch with the bereaved family while extending all necessary support during this difficult time.
