In a significant step aimed at improving student safety, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has decided to install spring-loaded devices on ceiling fans across hostel rooms and other campus facilities to prevent suicide attempts.
The decision comes after more than 10 cases of suicide were reported on campus over the past three years, prompting the institute to adopt preventive infrastructure measures alongside mental health interventions.
According to professor Pratik Sen, Dean of Student Affairs, the spring-loaded mechanism is designed to detach the ceiling fan if excessive weight is applied. This would interrupt any attempt at self-harm and create an opportunity for intervention.
“The aim is to ensure that students and faculty members do not resort to extreme steps. If such a situation arises, the device will prevent a fatal outcome and allow time for reconsideration,” Sen said.
Apart from modifying ceiling fans, the institute has also decided to remove curtain rods and ceiling-mounted pipes from hostel rooms, which could potentially be misused.
Students will instead be encouraged to use nylon cords for drying clothes. Officials said preparations are underway to implement these changes across all hostels at the earliest.
The IIT Kanpur campus houses over 9,000 students across 15 hostels. Authorities confirmed that all senior administrative officials have approved the measures, and groundwork for installation has already begun.
The decision follows recommendations by a committee constituted to address suicide-related concerns on campus. The panel had suggested structural modifications, including the installation of spring-loaded devices and removal of fixtures that could pose risks.
Institute officials emphasised that the move is part of a broader effort to promote student well-being and mental health awareness. By combining physical safeguards with support systems, the administration aims to reduce risks and encourage students to seek help during distress.
The measures are expected to be implemented soon as part of IIT Kanpur’s ongoing efforts to create a safer campus environment.
