The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has warned students and staff against taking part in political activities that could affect the institute's relationship with the government.
The institute said some people on campus had publicly expressed support for ongoing political movements and made critical comments in public.
In an email, IIT Roorkee reminded students, employees and other stakeholders that the institute's primary role is to provide education, conduct research and promote learning in fields such as engineering, technology, science and the arts. It said its existing conduct rules require students and employees to seek prior permission before taking part in political discussions or activities. The rules also restrict public statements in the media that could harm the institute's relations with the Central Government, other organisations or members of the public.
The advisory, which was widely shared on social media, faced criticism. The institute, however, said the communication was based on its existing rules and should not be taken out of context.
IIT Roorkee media cell in-charge Sonika Srivastava said such advisories are issued regularly every year under the institute's existing conduct rules. She clarified that the message does not introduce any new rule or policy and should not be misunderstood.
On July 20, IIT Roorkee also posted on X, saying it maintains a clear distinction between the personal views of individuals and official communication from the institute.
The institute said that opinions or content shared by individuals in their personal capacity should not be seen as the institute's views or endorsement. It added that all official communication is released only through its authorised channels.
