Jammu and Kashmir’s Cyber Police have registered an FIR against PDP leader Iltija Mufti and others for allegedly sharing a video of late Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on her official X handle.
Besides Iltija Mufti, FIRs have also been filed against several other individuals for disseminating secessionist propaganda and separatist content across social media, aimed at inciting violence and prejudice against the country.
Police on Thursday confirmed that evidence collected clearly suggests that the dissemination of such videos and other material indicates that the leader’s conduct amounted to the promotion of separatist ideology in Jammu and Kashmir. An FIR under relevant sections of the law has been filed at the Srinagar Cyber Police Station, they said.
Officials said that preliminary investigation suggests the circulation of such content was a deliberate attempt to sow seeds of discord and promote secessionism in the Union Territory using digital platforms.
Such activities have the tendency to incite public discontent and dissent against the state, and could also disturb public order and undermine unity. The FIR has been registered under Sections 152, 196(1), and 353(1)(b), (c), and (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. FIR No. 11/2026 has been registered at the Cyber Police Station, Srinagar, and further investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Police has issued an advisory for citizens urging them to stay away from posting any material on social media that could invite legal action.
