The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a heatwave alert for 11 districts of Haryana amid scorching temperatures across the state and other parts of north India.
According to the IMD, the districts under alert are Mahendragarh, Rewari, Jhajjar, Nuh, Palwal, Rohtak, Sirsa, Fatehabad, Hisar, Bhiwani, and Charkhi Dadri. A yellow heatwave alert has been issued for these districts.
From May 25, an orange heatwave alert has been issued for the same 11 districts: Sirsa, Fatehabad, Hisar, Bhiwani, Rohtak, Charkhi Dadri, Jhajjar, Rewari, Mahendragarh, Nuh, and Palwal.
A yellow heatwave alert has also been issued for nine other districts: Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Karnal, Gurugram, Faridabad, Sonipat, Panipat, and Jind. Residents have been urged to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun, particularly during the orange alert period.
From May 26, a yellow alert has been issued for Panchkula and Yamunanagar, while the remaining 20 districts will remain under an orange heatwave alert. On May 27, an orange heatwave alert has been issued for the entire state of Haryana.
According to the weather department, a fresh western disturbance is approaching the north Indian region, with chances of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places.
While Haryana witnessed a drop of 1.2 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures owing to thunderstorms on Saturday, almost all stations still recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.
Rohtak remained the hottest place with a daytime temperature of 44.1 degrees Celsius, followed by Sirsa at 44 degrees Celsius, Hisar at 42.4 degrees Celsius, and Jind at 42.1 degrees Celsius.
