The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several districts in Punjab, warning of thunderstorms, rain, heavy winds, and lightning due to an active western disturbance impacting the northern region. The alert, in effect until May 8, covers Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, Mohali, Sangrur, and Mansa — all districts bordering Himachal Pradesh.

On Sunday, many parts of the state witnessed light to moderate rainfall. According to IMD data, precipitation levels were as follows: Amritsar (5.8 mm), Ludhiana (10.6 mm), Patiala (8.4 mm), Pathankot (4 mm), Bathinda (5 mm), Gurdaspur (7.3 mm), SBS Nagar (28.8 mm), and Rupnagar (17 mm).

The showers led to an average temperature drop of 2.2°C across the state. Despite the dip, Bathinda recorded the highest temperature at 38.6°C. Overcast skies prevailed in most regions throughout the day.

The IMD’s Chandigarh centre has predicted continued unsettled weather in the coming days, with wind speeds between 40 to 60 km/h, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. While Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, Mohali, Sangrur, and Mansa remain under an orange alert, the rest of Punjab is under a yellow alert, also valid through May 8.

The authorities have advised residents to stay alert and take necessary precautions, especially during periods of intense wind or lightning activity.
