Northwest India is expected to witness rain and snow showers on December 27, and 28, as per the predictions of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Dense fog and cold wave conditions are also forecast in parts of Punjab until December 31.
Rainfall, snowfall, thunderstorms, and lightning are expected to affect the region of northwest India, including the Western Himalayas.
The disturbance, a cyclonic circulation, is at present positioned over north Pakistan and its surrounding areas at lower and middle tropospheric levels.
Meanwhile, an induced cyclonic circulation is hovering over southwest Rajasthan, with a trough extending from north Pakistan to the east-central Arabian Sea.
A fresh western disturbance is expected to impact the Western Himalayan Region from January 1, 2025, bringing light rainfall and snowfall to the region on January 1 and 2, the prediction stated.
In the past 24 hours, light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms was reported at isolated locations in Punjab. Areas such as Nangal, Barnala, Moga, Faridkot, Jalandhar, and Patiala received up to 4 mm of rain. Despite these showers, rainfall in the state has been deficient by 52 per cent so far this month.
The IMD has forecasted further weather changes due to the western disturbance, including potential rainfall and snowfall in the coming days.
