Char Dham Yatra 2025

If you or someone you know is planning to undertake the Char Dham Yatra, staying informed about the current weather conditions is crucial.

The pilgrimage is underway, but devotees are already facing tough weather challenges. In Chamoli, Uttarakhand, daytime temperatures have plunged to -10°C, underscoring the need for thorough preparation against the extreme cold.

Weather alerts issued by IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released weather advisories for pilgrims travelling to Kedarnath, Gangotri, and other Char Dham sites, with rainfall expected in several districts starting May 5.

An orange alert has been issued for rain, gusty winds, and hailstorms, while a red alert has been sounded for May 7 and 8, warning of heavy rainfall and poor visibility conditions.

Challenging terrain meets harsh weather

The Char Dham pilgrimage sites—Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath—sit at elevations exceeding 3,000 metres in Uttarakhand’s Himalayan region. While spiritually significant, these locations present physical challenges and are prone to sudden weather shifts. Pilgrims are strongly advised to be well-prepared to mitigate health risks and ensure a safe journey.

Red alert issued for Uttarkashi

The Meteorological Centre in Dehradun has issued a red alert for Uttarkashi district on May 7 and 8, warning of intense rainfall. Pilgrims en route to Gangotri and Yamunotri are urged to exercise extreme caution due to the potential for hazardous conditions. An orange alert has also been issued for other hill districts, with forecasts indicating the likelihood of heavy rain and snowfall.

The wet spell is expected to persist across the region until May 14, with peak intensity on May 7 and 8. The authorities have advised all devotees and tourists participating in the Char Dham Yatra to closely monitor official weather updates and avoid vulnerable locations such as riverbanks and steep trails.

Cold wave grips Chamoli

Chamoli district continues to reel under extreme weather conditions, with daytime temperatures plunging to -10°C due to unrelenting rain and cold winds. The intense chill has heightened risks for pilgrims and tourists, prompting the authorities to urge caution.

According to the latest 24-hour data, several areas have received significant rainfall:

             Joshimath – 90 mm

             Haripur – 56 mm

             Laksar – 40 mm

             Roshanabad – 35 mm

             Bhagwanpur – 15 mm

             Almora – 12.6 mm

             Chakrata – 8.3 mm

             Dehradun – 3.9 mm

With inclement weather continuing, travellers are strongly advised to dress warmly, carry essential supplies, and remain alert to updates from the local authorities and the IMD.
