The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chandigarh Centre, has issued a severe weather warning for several districts in Punjab, forecasting thunderstorms, dust storms, and strong winds through May 5.
According to the IMD, wind speeds are expected to range between 40 and 60 km/h, with the potential for gusts exceeding 80 km/h in areas such as Patiala, Mohali, Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot. The department has cautioned that these conditions could escalate to squall-like scenarios, posing risks to standing crops, temporary structures, power lines, and trees.
Residents are advised to remain indoors and exercise caution during the forecast period.
The warning follows a spell of dust storms and winds reaching speeds of 20–30 km/h that swept through Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot on May 1, accompanied by rainfall. The sudden weather change brought temporary relief from the ongoing heat, leading to a noticeable drop in temperatures across the state.
While Punjab’s average maximum temperature is currently 0.2°C below normal, intense heat persists in several regions, with Bathinda recording the highest temperature at 41.2°C.
The IMD has predicted relatively calm weather in southern and eastern districts on May 2, though dusty winds are expected in other regions. On May 3 and 4, widespread thunderstorms, high winds, lightning, and dust storms are likely across most districts. A slight reprieve is expected by May 5, though isolated areas may continue to experience adverse weather.
