Torrential rain from cyclone Remal has led to severe waterlogging at the Raj Bhavan in Manipur, officials reported on Friday.
The relentless downpour over the past few days has triggered floods in the Imphal valley, resulting in three fatalities and affecting thousands.
A senior official stated that water accumulated at the Raj Bhavan premises due to breaches in the embankments of the Imphal river at multiple locations.
"The situation at the Raj Bhavan has improved considerably compared to the last two days. The inundated areas will be cleared soon depending on the overall weather condition," he said.
Ningombam Bupenda, spokesperson for the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), shared photographs on social media platform X, depicting the flooding at Raj Bhavan.
He remarked, “Raj Bhavan is getting submerged in flood. It is rare to see the Manipur Governor personally checking water levels in the Raj Bhavan."
Bupenda stressed the urgency of reducing the flood level swiftly to prevent further damage.
In response to Bupenda’s post, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently meditating at the Vivekananda Rock Memorial in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu.
Ramesh posted on X, “And the outgoing PM is deep in meditation,” highlighting the Prime Minister’s absence during the crisis.
Awangbou Newmai, Manipur’s Minister for Water Resources and Relief & Disaster Management, reported on Thursday evening that a total of 1,88,143 people have been affected by the floods, with at least 24,265 houses damaged across the northeastern state.
The overflowing Imphal River has inundated several areas, with water entering hundreds of houses, affecting several thousand people who have subsequently taken shelter at nearby community halls, he added.
"Due to incessant rainfall, the riverbank has been breached near Keirang, Khabam and Lairiyengbam Leikai areas in Imphal East district and water gushed into several areas, inundating hundreds of houses. Several areas in Heingang and Khurai assembly constituencies in Imphal East district have been badly affected, with floodwater at chest level in many parts," he said.
Due to severe flooding caused by breaches in embankments along river banks, the government declared a two-day public holiday for all state offices until May 31.
