Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday extended Eid-ul-Adha greetings to the people and called for harmony and unity in the society.
"Greetings on Eid-ul-Adha! May this special occasion further cement the bonds of harmony and togetherness in our society. May everyone be happy and healthy," Modi said on X.
On the auspicious occasion of Eid ul-Adha, devout Muslims gathered at mosques and various religious sites across the country on Monday to offer namaz.
In many parts of Asia, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, India, and Bangladesh, Eid ul-Adha was observed on Monday, while in other regions like Saudi Arabia, Libya, Egypt, and Yemen, the celebrations took place on Sunday.
Eid ul-Adha commemorates the Quranic tale of Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice Ismail as an act of obedience to God. However, before the sacrifice could be carried out, God provided a ram as an offering.
It's worth noting that in the Christian and Jewish telling, the story differs as Abraham is ordered to sacrifice his other son, Isaac.
