India moves students out of Iran amid escalating tensions

As Iran and Israel exchanged missile and drone strikes for the fifth straight day on Tuesday, the government said it was moving Indian students within the country to ensure their safety. There are more than 10,000 Indians in Iran, out of whom 6,000 happen to be students.

Students being evacuated from Tehran amid escalating conflict with Israel.


Amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday confirmed that Indian students in Tehran have been relocated to safer areas through arrangements made by the Indian Embassy in Iran.

 

As Iran and Israel exchanged missile and drone strikes for the fifth straight day on Tuesday, the government said it was moving Indian students within the country to ensure their safety. There are more than 10,000 Indians in Iran, out of whom 6,000 happen to be students.

 

Around 600 Indian students were shifted to Qom from Tehran, which has been targeted by the Israeli forces. Around 110 students from Urmia also reached the Armenian border Monday evening and were likely to be evacuated by air on Tuesday.

 

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke to his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan on Sunday. Students from Shiraz and Isfahan are being shifted to Yazd, a source told reporters here.

 

"The Indian embassy in Tehran is continuously monitoring the security situation and engaging Indian students in Iran to ensure their safety," said the MEA in a statement.

 

 "In some cases, students are being relocated with the embassy's facilitation to safer places within Iran. Other feasible options are also under examination," it added.

 

Jaishankar also spoke with the deputy PM and foreign minister of the UAE, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, about the situation in West Asia.

Residents with independent transport arrangements have also been advised to leave Tehran, in view of the developing situation, the MEA statement further added.

 

The Indian Embassy in Tehran, in a separate post on X (formerly Twitter) said, "All Indian Nationals and PIOs who can move out of Tehran using their own resources, are advised to move to a safe location outside the city.".

Kashmiri students safely cross Armenia border

The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has confirmed that 90 to 95 Kashmiri students studying in Iran have successfully crossed the Armenia border amid the tensions.

 

JKSA national convenor Nasir Khuehami said the students are expected to reach Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, by noon. “We spoke to them, and they are safe,” he added.

 

Families of many Kashmiri students stranded in Iran have appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for urgent evacuation measures.
