The World Health Organisation announced on Tuesday that a young child in West Bengal had contracted bird flu from the H9N2 virus.

In February, the child was admitted to a local hospital's pediatric intensive care unit due to severe and persistent respiratory problems, high fever, and abdominal cramps.

After receiving a diagnosis and appropriate treatment, the child was discharged three months later, as reported by the WHO.

The child had been in contact with poultry both at home and in the local environment. According to the agency, the child's family or other contacts have not reported respiratory illness symptoms.

The WHO added that information on the vaccination status and details of antiviral treatment were not available at the time of reporting.

This is the second time a person in India has been infected with H9N2 avian flu, with the first case occurring in 2019, according to the agency.

Although H9N2 usually results in mild illness, the UN agency warned that occasional cases of human infection could still happen since this virus is widespread among birds in various areas.
