India will address attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh: Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed confidence on Friday that the Indian government will address the alleged attacks on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh through diplomatic channels.

Sarma stressed that the Centre is handling the situation with caution, focusing on ensuring the safety of those affected while maintaining strict vigilance along the Indo-Bangladesh border.

“The Modi government is managing the situation with patience and caution. The focus is on ensuring safety and security within Bangladesh, rather than allowing those persecuted to enter India,” Sarma said.

He urged patience, emphasising that a political and diplomatic approach is the best way forward.

Sarma highlighted the role of international organisations, particularly the United Nations, in resolving the issue through diplomatic means.

He refrained from making direct comments on the alleged attacks, expressing concern that it could lead to further repercussions for minorities in Bangladesh.

The Chief Minister also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts to protect Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists in Bangladesh.

He reassured that Assam is maintaining strict border security, allowing entry only to individuals with valid passports, visas, and Indian citizenship.

Sarma also mentioned previous concerns about the potential influx of people through the border, warning against Bangladesh becoming a refuge for insurgents from Northeast India.

He noted that cooperation with the previous Bangladeshi government had helped curb extremist activities in the region and expressed hope for continued collaboration with the new administration.
