An Indo-Australian delegation, consisting of diplomats and senior officials from Australia, visited the revered Hazratbal Shrine in Srinagar to pay their respects on Tuesday, officials said.
The high-profile delegation was received by the Chairperson of Jammu and Kashmir’s Waqf Board, Dr. Darakhshan Andrabi, along with other members of the local administration and the shrine’s management body.
The visitors were briefed about the history and sanctity of Hazratbal Shrine, which houses a holy relic belonging to the Islamic prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Officials at the shrine said the visiting diplomats showed deep interest in learning about the religious and cultural traditions associated with Hazratbal. They appreciated the spiritual atmosphere of the shrine and described its uniqueness and importance as a symbol of Kashmir’s composite cultural identity.
Andrabi welcomed the delegation and highlighted Hazratbal’s role as a centre of devotion and peace. She said, “This shrine is not only a place of immense religious value but also a symbol of harmony. It is heartening to see international delegates visiting here and showing respect.”
The visit comes weeks after a controversy erupted in the shrine when authorities tried to put the Ashoka emblem engraved on stone inside the compound of the shrine.
Earlier, the delegation met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to discuss a range of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects aimed at fostering sustainable development in Jammu and Kashmir.
