The seventh edition of the joint military exercise between the Indian and French Armies, 'SHAKTI 2024,' commenced on Monday at the Eastern Command’s Joint Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya.
This biennial exercise, held alternately in India and France, aims to strengthen cooperation and interoperability between the two armed forces.
Ambassador Thierry Mathou, the Ambassador of France to India, delivered a speech highlighting the significance of Indo-French defence cooperation at the opening ceremony.
This year’s exercise, which will continue until May 26, 2024, focuses on ground control operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrain under United Nations mandates.
Notably, 'SHAKTI 2024' features an elevated level of complexity compared to previous editions.
It involves twice the number of troops, includes a brigade-level command post exercise, and incorporates Air Force assets alongside Navy and Air Force observers for the first time.
The Indian contingent, comprising 90 personnel, primarily represents the RAJPUT Regiment, along with personnel from other arms and services.
Observers from the Indian Navy and Indian Air Force will participate in the exercise.
The French contingent, also consisting of 90 personnel, is mainly represented by individuals from the 13th Foreign Legion Half-Brigade (13th DBLE).
The exercise holds special significance as it builds upon the momentum of Indo-French defence ties, highlighted by reciprocal visits of leaders and symbolic gestures of solidarity.
Ambassador Mathou emphasized the strategic partnership between the two nations, citing the joint participation of troops in national events as a testament to the enduring friendship.
"This exercise will allow both our Armies to learn from each other and become better at fighting together at all levels," remarked Ambassador Mathou, expressing confidence in the exercise's outcome.
'SHAKTI 2024' takes place amidst an intensification of Indo-French defence engagements following President Macron’s State Visit to India in January.
The forthcoming naval exercise 'Varuna' and French participation in India’s multi-nation 'Tarang-Shakti' exercise adds another layer to strengthening the bilateral ties between the two nations.
