Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday alleged that the Indo-US interim trade agreement will harm Indian farmers. During his address at the “Mazdoor Kissan Maha Rally” here, Rahul claimed that the deal had remained stalled for four months because of disagreements over opening the agriculture sector.

He questioned why the deal was finalised suddenly. “The question is, the work that the Prime Minister did not do for four months, why was it done in just 15 minutes?” he said. Rahul also asked why the trade agreement was pushed through so quickly.

He further alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given a guarantee to US President Donald Trump that India would buy US products worth Rs 9 lakh crore every year. He said such a deal would severely harm Indian farmers.

During his speech, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha also claimed that he was recently not allowed to speak in the Lok Sabha after the President’s address. He said he wanted to raise issues related to former Army Chief Gen Manoj Naravane’s memoirs.

Rahul said he intended to refer to an unpublished book by Gen Naravane (retd), which, according to him, mentioned a lack of response from the political leadership during Chinese troop movements near the border.

Several senior Congress leaders were present at the rally. These included K C Venugopal, Bhupesh Baghel, Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Leader of Opposition in Punjab Partap Singh Bajwa, former chief ministers Charanjit Singh Channi and Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Randhawa, and senior leader Vijay Inder Singla.
