In response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to conserve fuel amid the ongoing West Asia conflict, the Indore Municipal Corporation has announced a “No Car Day” initiative, urging residents to use public transport once a week instead of private vehicles.
The move comes as Indore — one of Madhya Pradesh’s prominent commercial hubs — records the highest number of on-road vehicles in the state. The city reportedly consumes nearly 1 million litres of petrol and 1.5 million litres of diesel daily, raising concerns about sustainability in the event of a fuel shortage. Despite this, Indore has earned recognition as India’s cleanest city, owing to a series of environment-friendly initiatives implemented by local authorities.
Officials believe the “No Car Day” plan will further strengthen these efforts.
Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav said he would personally refrain from using his car once a week and expressed confidence that citizens would voluntarily adopt the initiative. “While no specific day has been finalised yet, residents may choose any day of the week to use public transport,” he said.
Bhargav also highlighted that Indore has previously observed an annual “No Car Day” on September 22. According to him, last year’s observance resulted in a 20 per cent reduction in petrol and diesel consumption in a single day.
“If implemented weekly, the initiative could lead to substantial fuel savings,” he added.
For now, the Municipal Corporation has appealed to citizens to voluntarily pick a day each week to avoid using private cars. Officials indicated that a specific day—possibly Saturday—may soon be officially designated as the city’s weekly “No Car Day.”
The initiative is expected to play a key role in promoting sustainable urban mobility while reducing fuel consumption in the city.
