In a significant anti-drug operation, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and Mumbai Customs jointly destroyed 31.948 kg of Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) worth a staggering Rs 265 crore.

This high-value drug incineration took place under the supervision of a high-level Drug Destruction Committee of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), comprising senior officials from both agencies.

The narcotics, including heroin, cocaine, and marijuana, were incinerated at the Common Hazardous Waste Treatment Storage & Disposal Facility (CHWTSDF), MWML, Taloja, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.

The destruction of these seized drugs is crucial to prevent their hazardous impact on the environment, as they pose serious risks if released improperly.

This marks the third drug destruction operation in the current financial year, following similar actions on July 19, 2023, and December 13, 2023. In total, 215.268 kg of drugs valued at an astounding Rs 1540 crore have been destroyed this fiscal year, underscoring the relentless efforts of law enforcement agencies in combating drug trafficking.

The seized drugs were confiscated by various agencies, including the Postal Appraisal Section (PAS), the Special Investigation and Intelligence Branch (SIIB), and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).

Mumbai Customs reaffirms its commitment to stringent law enforcement to curb the illicit trafficking of NDPS substances and safeguard citizens' well-being.

Under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, individuals involved in the possession and trafficking of banned narcotics face severe penalties.

Section 8 of the NDPS Act, along with sections 21, 23, and 29, impose stringent punishments for such offenses, in conjunction with provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.

While this operation marks a significant victory in the fight against drug trafficking, authorities continue their investigations into the matter. Further details are awaited as law enforcement agencies intensify efforts to dismantle drug networks and ensure a safer and healthier society for all.
