Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla on Friday said 40 per cent of the profits earned from products made by inmates under the ‘Har Haath Ko Kaam’ initiative are being given to them as wages. These products are sold through the prison department’s HimKaara store.
Addressing inmates at the Model Central Correctional Home in Shimla district, the Governor said prisoners were being trained in various trades so they could become self-reliant after their release. This will help them support their families and even provide jobs to others by starting their own ventures.
He said, “The biggest criminals in society are the drug addicts, as those who take drugs punish themselves and others for life. Accepting drugs into one's life and serving them to others is also a crime.” Praising the cultural performances by the inmates and staff, he expressed happiness that a staff member had won a silver medal in singing at the national level.
The Governor appreciated the inmates for reciting a chapter from the Bhagwad Geeta and congratulated the jail superintendent for encouraging such activities.
Shukla also honoured representatives of various government and non-government organisations working for the welfare of prisoners and correctional facilities.
Later, the Governor visited an exhibition showcasing products made by inmates. He also offered prayers at a temple inside the reformatory, paid floral tribute at Mahatma Gandhi’s statue, and planted a sapling.
Additional Director General (Prisons) Abhishek Trivedi said a recent exhibition of inmate-made products at the Gaiety Theatre in Shimla earned an income of Rs 3 lakh.
