Kashmir Valley continues to reel under a relentless cold wave that began in mid-November, amid dry, foggy weather in the plains, officials said on Tuesday. Night temperatures have continued to fall sharply across the majority of the weather stations, with the summer capital Srinagar recording minus 3.7 degrees Celsius.
While there was a prediction of light snowfall over the higher reaches and rainfall in the plains till December 8, the MeT office in Srinagar has said that the cold wave conditions are likely to persist until December 10.
According to the MeT office in Srinagar, “The summer capital recorded minus 3.7 degrees Celsius, while Srinagar International Airport recorded minus 4.0 degrees on the previous night.”
Additionally, the MeT officials said the weather conditions are expected to change from December 11 onwards.
Katra, in Jammu, remained the warmest place with 10.1 degrees, while South Kashmir’s Pulwama was the coldest place with minus 5.1 degrees.
Daytime temperatures have stayed relatively moderate across Jammu and Kashmir, while nighttime temperatures have plunged below freezing point across most weather stations in the Valley. In central Kashmir, temperatures in Budgam plunged to minus 4.1 degrees, while Ganderbal recorded minus 2.1. Temperatures also fell sharply in South Kashmir’s Kulgam, Shopian, and Anantnag over the past few days.
Qazigund, known as the gateway to Kashmir, recorded minus 3.6 degrees, while several other weather stations across north Kashmir, including Baramulla, Bandipora, and Kupwara, also recorded a sharp decline in the night temperature.
In the Jammu division, the weather remained relatively moderate, with Jammu city recording 7.3 degrees Celsius, while Banihal, Kishtwar, Bhaderwah, and Batote experienced a slight dip in the nighttime temperatures.
