The Punjab Police on Thursday said it had busted an inter-state illegal weapons supply network and arrested two individuals from Uttar Pradesh in connection with the case.
The Counter Intelligence wing of Punjab Police in Jalandhar recovered 10 country-made pistols along with 20 magazines from the accused, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said.
According to the DGP, the accused were involved in procuring illegal weapons and had carried out firing at the residence of a travel agent in Garshankar as part of an extortion attempt. The attack was allegedly carried out on the instructions of foreign-based handlers, he said in a post on X.
During sustained investigation, police found that the accused were working under the directions of foreign criminals operating from Germany and the United States. They were supplying weapons to criminal gangs active in Punjab, Yadav added.
Initial probe has revealed strong links between the accused and foreign-based handlers allegedly involved in coordinating terror and organised criminal activities. A case has been registered at the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) police station in Amritsar in connection with the matter.
Further probe is underway and efforts are being made to trace and dismantle the entire network, the DGP said.
