Prabhat will take charge from RR Swain, who retires on September 30.

IPS Nalin Prabhat to take charge as Special DG of J&K police

Nalin Prabhat, 55, is a three-time police gallantry medal winner and previously led the anti-Naxal police force ‘Greyhounds’ in Andhra Pradesh.

A highly decorated IPS officer, Nalin Prabhat has been appointed the Special Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Prabhat will take charge from RR Swain, who retires on September 30.

An order from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) stated that Prabhat, a 1992 IPS officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre, is being transferred to Jammu and Kashmir with “immediate effect.”

Upon Swain's retirement on September 30, “Prabhat is appointed DGP, Jammu and Kashmir.”

Prabhat, 55, is a three-time police gallantry medal winner and previously led the anti-Naxal police force ‘Greyhounds’ in Andhra Pradesh.

He has also served extensively in the CRPF, overseeing operations in Kashmir as IG and ADG.

The government has shortened Prabhat's tenure as Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG) and ordered his inter-cadre deputation from Andhra Pradesh to the AGMUT cadre.

An order from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved MHA’s proposal to “curtail” Prabhat’s tenure as NSG Director General.

The order stated that inter-cadre deputation of Prabhat from Andhra Pradesh to AGMUT cadre was initially “for three years from the date of joining the AGMUT cadre or until further orders, whichever is earlier, in relaxation of inter-cadre deputation guidelines.”

A recent spurt in terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir has led to casualties among security forces, with several officers, jawans, police officials and civilians losing their lives.
