Two ivory pieces worth more than ₹2 crore were reported missing from the Pangod military station in Kerala, prompting a police investigation, officials said on Friday.
Pangod Police registered a case at the Poojappura Police Station and took 17 people into custody in connection with the theft.
According to the FIR filed on the complaint of an officer from the Indian Army’s Madras Regiment, the two ivory pieces were kept at the officers’ mess inside the military station and were discovered missing recently.
The FIR stated that a DJ party was held at the mess between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Police suspect that someone who attended the event may have been involved in the theft. The case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for house trespass and theft of government property.
Based on details provided by military officials regarding outsiders who entered the premises for the party, police detained 17 individuals from different parts of Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday. A separate preventive detention case was also registered against the suspects as part of the investigation.
Officials at the Poojappura police station said the detained persons are being interrogated, and a detailed probe is underway to recover the missing ivory. Authorities added that the ivory had been kept at the military station since it began operations several decades ago.
