The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Friday said approximately 32,000 cases of narcotics’ abuse have been registered across the Union Territory since 2022. Responding to questions from several health legislators, the Health and Medical Education Department informed them that a total of 32,517 patients have been enrolled for treatment, including 16,759 in the Kashmir division and 15,758 in the Jammu division.
According to official data, Srinagar reported the highest number in the Kashmir division with 6,100 cases, followed by South Kashmir’s Anantnag with 2,157, Kulgam with 2,075, Baramulla with 1,623, Pulwama with 1,312 and Budgam with 1,166. Other districts include Bandipora (817), Shopian (713), Kupwara (552), and Ganderbal (244).
In the Jammu division, the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu accounted for the highest number, with 9,806 cases. While GMC Kathua had 1,529, GMC Rajouri 1,227, Udhampur 968, Ramban 577, Doda 566, Poonch 359, Kishtwar 311, Samba 292 and Reasi reported 123 cases in the same period. The government, in response to the questions, said the de-addiction centres across Jammu and Kashmir were being strengthened under the NashaMukt Bharat Abhiyan.
On Thursday, the Minister for Health and Medical Education, Sakina Itoo, informed that drug de-addiction OPD services were available in all 20 districts across J&K, while IPD facilities were available in all Government Medical Colleges.
The government also added that several awareness drives, community programmes and Panchayat-level monitoring mechanisms were being implemented to identify vulnerable youth.
