The Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister, Sakeena Itoo, has rescheduled the dates of the upcoming summer break in the UT following the sizzling heatwave conditions prevailing in the region.
The minister said the government has decided to announce summer break early for all government and private institutions in the Kashmir Valley from June 23 instead of July 1.
Speaking to reporters here in Srinagar, she said, “The current weather conditions in the region are not bearable for the students, particularly young kids. In the wake of these ongoing conditions, we have decided to announce early-summer vacation for schools in the Kashmir division from June 23.”
The Indian Meteorological Department has also confirmed that the ongoing weather conditions are likely to continue in the region till the end of this month.
The temperatures in the Kashmir Valley witnessed an unprecedented increase, with Srinagar on Thursday recording 35.2 degrees Celsius, the highest in two decades, and seven degrees above the seasonal average.
The minister has also said that the government will subsequently determine the extension of the break in case the heatwave conditions continue.
Furthermore, the minister said that the government had to reconsider the earlier decision due to the prevailing weather conditions after several health advisories.
Earlier, the minister had ordered a change in school timing, saying, “From Saturday, the school timing in Srinagar municipality limit areas will be from 8 am to 1 pm and in case of schools outside the Srinagar municipality limits, the schools shall function from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm.”
