The Congress’s Jammu and Kashmir unit joined anti-Iran war protests on Friday as the Legislative Assembly resumed the second leg of the Budget session.
The ruling National Conference and its ally Congress staged protests inside the House against US-Israel aggression on Iran, while PDP legislators demanded that the Assembly pass a resolution condemning the strikes.
Tensions rose when Congress MLAs and BJP legislators sparred in the well of the House after BJP members called Rahul Gandhi “Pappu” in response to strong criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Congress legislators.
People’s Democratic Party (PDP) legislator from Budgam, Syed Muntazir Mehdi, demanded that the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly pass a resolution condemning the alleged US-Israel aggression against Iran.
“The hearts of the people of Jammu and Kashmir are wounded in the same manner in which Imam Khamenei was martyred. We will try to find a way to heal these wounded hearts,” Mehdi said during a media interaction outside the Assembly.
He added that a formal resolution was needed to reflect public sentiment. “We want a resolution to be passed so that the emotions of the people of Jammu and Kashmir are translated into words. We also want to send a message that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are protesting against American and Israeli terrorism.”
Mehdi further said, “When someone is in trouble, we help them. Iran is in the hearts of Kashmiris, and Kashmiris are in the hearts of Iranians. We want to give them a message that they should not consider themselves alone in this difficult time.”
