Jammu and Kashmir is set to receive heavy rain and snowfall, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a widespread wet spell due to an incoming western disturbance.
The advisory issued by the IMD Srinagar office states that from October 4 to 7, the most intense weather is expected between the night of October 5 and the morning of October 7.
While the weather is expected to remain dry until October 4, there is a possibility of light rain, thunder, and gusty winds towards late evening or night.
Director of MeT Srinagar, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, said, “From October 5 to 7, generally cloudy weather is expected, with the possibility of intermittent spells of light to moderate rain, thunder, and gusty winds, and light snow over higher reaches is also expected at many places in J&K.”
“However, from October 8 to 10, the weather conditions are expected to improve across the region,” he added.
The MeT has issued an advisory to farmers, urging them to complete the harvesting of paddy and other horticultural crops and ensure safe storage by the afternoon of October 4, before the wet spell sets in.
According to the advisory sent to regional authorities, including the Divisional Commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu, the system is expected to cause moderate to heavy rain in the plains and significant snowfall in the higher reaches of Kashmir.
Affected areas may include Anantnag–Pahalgam, Kulgam, Sinthan Pass, Shopian, Pir Ki Gali, Sonamarg–Zojila, Gulmarg, Bandipora–Razdan Pass, and Kupwara–Sadhna Pass.
While higher altitudes may see heavy snow accumulation, moderate snowfall could also occur in mid-level mountainous regions.
