Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday said the budget session of the Assembly holds significant importance as it offers an opportunity to reflect on the collective journey and achievements.
The ongoing budget session of the Assembly, spread over nearly three months, began on Monday with LG Sinha’s address.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who holds the finance portfolio, is expected to present the 2026–27 budget in the House on February 6.
In his opening address, LG Sinha said, “This session holds special significance as it offers an opportunity to reflect on our collective journey, review our achievements, and chart a clear roadmap for the future. It reaffirms our shared commitment to fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.”
Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather warned MLAs against disrupting the House and urged them to allow proceedings to run smoothly during the budget session.
He said all necessary preparations for the session have been completed, with a focus on ensuring smooth conduct of the proceedings. “It will be double sittings,” he added.
Congress leader and MLA Tariq Hameed Karra said the session provides an opportunity to raise public issues.
BJP MLA Vikram Randhawa said it offers a chance to seek answers from the government regarding the implementation of the budget provisions and poll promises.
This will be Omar’s second budget since he became chief minister on October 16, 2024, ending nearly six years of Central rule.
The ongoing budget session is likely to conclude on April 4 and will be held in three phases, the first before the commencement of Ramadan, followed by two phases after Eid-ul-Fitr in March and April.
According to sources, opposition parties, including the BJP and Congress, are set to corner the government over unfulfilled poll promises and the implementation of last year’s budget commitments.
