The Jammu and Kashmir cabinet meeting is scheduled for Tuesday to finalise several proposals, including a recommendation to Lieutenant Governor (LG) Manoj Sinha for convening the autumn session of the Assembly.

Sources revealed that the cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, is expected to meet tomorrow at 10 am to propose a date to the LG for convening the autumn session of the Assembly. The LG holds the power to summon the Assembly.

As per the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, there must not be a gap of more than six months between the last meeting of one session and the first meeting of the next. The Act says: “The Lieutenant Governor shall, from time to time, summon the Legislative Assembly to meet at such time and place as he thinks fit, but six months shall not intervene between its last sitting in one session and the date appointed for its first sitting in the next session.”

Since the last meeting was held in April this year, the next meeting shall be held by or before October 28.

The issues of statehood and reservation are likely to dominate proceedings in the House, as the Central government is continuously delaying the dates and timing.

In the previous Assembly session, three resolutions on statehood lapsed due to continuous disruptions by the National Conference over the rejection of an adjournment motion brought by its legislators on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
