Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has condemned a fashion show held in Gulmarg, saying his government would not have allowed such an event at any time of the year, especially during the holy month of Ramzan. His remarks came after protests in the assembly, where many called the event "obscene."

Abdullah clarified that the four-day event, which took place on December 7, was privately organised at a private hotel without any government involvement. “The disappointment and concerns of the people are valid,” he said, adding that preliminary findings suggest the show hurt public sentiment.

The issue also drew criticism from Kashmir’s chief cleric and Hurriyat Conference Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. He expressed outrage over the event, stating that such acts of "obscenity in the name of tourism" would not be tolerated in Kashmir, which is known for its Sufi culture and religious traditions.

In response, Abdullah acknowledged the public anger and said his office had contacted local authorities, demanding a report within 24 hours. “The images I have seen show a complete disregard for local sensitivities, especially in this holy month,” he wrote on X.

During his address to the assembly, Abdullah strongly criticised the event organisers for not considering public sentiment or the appropriateness of the venue. “Some argue this should not have happened in Ramzan. I believe it should not have happened at all,” he said.

The chief minister emphasized that the government had no role in the event. “It was a private function, held in a private hotel, with private invitations. No government permission was sought, no public funds were used, and no officials were involved,” he clarified.

An official inquiry has been launched, and further action will be taken based on its findings.
