Jammu and Kashmir has recorded total revenue receipts of Rs 8,860.52 crore up to August 2025, including Rs 6,095.52 crore in tax collections and Rs 2,765 crore in non-tax revenue, revealed the latest official figures.

According to statistics, the goods and services tax (GST) emerged as a major contributor, generating Rs 3,408.14 crore, which accounts for nearly 56 per cent of total tax revenue.

Other major contributions include excise duties at Rs 861 crore (14.1 per cent), Motor Spirit Tax at Rs 708.67 crore (11.6 per cent), water usage charges at Rs 380 crore (6.2 per cent), transport sector taxes at Rs 370 crore (6.1 per cent), stamp duty at Rs 287 crore (4.7 per cent), mining at Rs 49.52 crore (0.8 per cent), and water supply charges at Rs 31.19 crore (0.5 per cent).

Officials said steady inflows were due to a combination of widening the tax base, stronger compliance measures, and digitisation of the revenue process.

Initiatives like E-Stamping, the E-Abgari platform for excise, risk-based e-way bill verification, and scrutiny of red-flag GST cases have played a significant role in improving efficiency and reducing leakages.

Meanwhile, the Economic Survey of Jammu and Kashmir showed the upward trend in tax revenue, with collections rising from Rs 12,335.47 crore in fiscal year 2022-23 to Rs 13,903.22 crore in 2023-24.

GST has particularly benefited from the expansion of the dealer base, which rose from 115,894 in 2019-20 to 216,033 by January 2025. The active registrations have doubled to 151,288, reflecting both improved compliance and the formalisation of previously unregistered businesses.

Economists noted that the increase in revenue will provide the government with greater fiscal space to fund infrastructure, social welfare, and development projects while reducing dependence on central grants and borrowings.
