Leader of the Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Sunil Sharma, said on Monday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) empathises with the flood victims in the Union Territory (UT).
He said the victims would be given a comprehensive relief package, as the losses incurred must be fully compensated.
During a brief media interaction in Srinagar, Sharma said the government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was missing on the ground after floods hit Jammu and Kashmir. Taking a swipe at the NC-lead government in the UT, he said, “Omar Sahab was busy in Chennai, preparing for the Paris visit.”
He said senior BJP leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, met affected families, expressed solidarity, and announced a relief package of more than Rs 209 crore.
He also said there was no information yet about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to J&K, though he is expected in the coming days.
Sharma didn’t mention the fact that Omar Abdullah was among the first leaders to arrive in Jammu to monitor the situation when the region faced imminent flood threats. Omar was also one of the first leaders to visit Chositi village, where a cloudburst swept away hundreds of people, including pilgrims and security personnel.
Jammu and Kashmir has suffered losses worth billions, with continuous highway blockades halting traffic and heavy rains disrupting the Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage. Besides, flash floods and landslides damaged several houses and residential buildings, leaving hundreds homeless.
The upcoming Prime Minister's visit is crucial and will be watched closely, as people in Jammu and Kashmir are expecting a major flood relief package along with the development of several key projects.
