J-K govt grants land ownership to PoJK displaced persons

West Pakistani Refugees (WPRs) celebrate after the J&K administration granted proprietary rights to WPRs for land in the union territory, in Jammu on Wednesday.

The Jammu and Kashmir government on Friday conferred proprietary rights over evacuees' land to displaced persons from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) from the years 1947, 1965, and 1971, as well as those displaced from West Pakistan.

The landmark decision was made by the Administrative Council, chaired by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, during a meeting.

Land rights for displaced persons

The Council approved the transfer of ownership of evacuees' land to these displaced persons, effectively granting them the same proprietary rights previously conferred on state land. The decision addresses long-standing demands from families affected by displacement, who have sought formal ownership rights for decades.

The official spokesperson for the government stated that the transfer process will be carried out in a time-bound manner. The custodian concerned has been instructed to facilitate the transfer, ensuring proper safeguards are in place to prevent misuse and unauthorised encroachments on the evacuees' land.

The processing of applications for these proprietary rights is set to be completed within 30 days, with the entire procedure expected to conclude within six months.

Land allocation for development projects

In addition to the land rights decision, the Administrative Council approved the transfer of land measuring 2292 kanals and 2 marlas for various departmental uses.

This includes:

  • 1212 Kanal 12 Marla in Tehsil Dinga Amb, District Kathua, and 1070 Kanal in Tehsil Samba and Vijaypur, District Samba, allocated to the Industries & Commerce Department for the development of industrial estates. This initiative aims to foster regional development and generate employment opportunities.

  • Two Kanal 14 Marla of land in Shuhama, District Ganderbal, earmarked for the construction of a police post.

  • Six Kanal 16 Marla and three Sirsai in Lar, District Ganderbal, designated for the construction of a police station.

These allocations are intended to enhance public safety and improve administrative capabilities in these regions. The construction of these facilities will provide secure accommodation for police personnel, thereby bolstering law enforcement and addressing public concerns effectively.

The spokesperson further highlighted the government's ongoing commitment to addressing the needs of displaced persons and fulfilling their long-standing requests for land ownership.

This decision marks a crucial step in providing relief and securing the future for many affected families across the region.
