The Jammu and Kashmir government on Saturday initiated the process of taking over the management of more than 215 schools affiliated with the proscribed and now banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), officials said.
On Saturday morning, teams from the district administration, along with the police, visited the schools across the Valley and assumed control of their management, they said.
Principals of nearby higher secondary schools also accompanied the officials to take over the full management of these schools.
The process began after the School Education Department on Friday ordered the takeover of the respective schools associated with JeI and its Falah-e-Aam Trust.
The order stated: “The managing committee of over 215 schools shall be taken over by the District Magistrate/Deputy Commissioner concerned, who shall propose a fresh Managing Committee in due course for the concerned schools after getting these duly verified.”
Earlier, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs had declared Jamaat-e-Islami an unlawful association under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), first on February 28, 2019, and then again on February 27, 2024.
The order stated that, “Intelligence officials have identified a number of schools which were found to be directly or indirectly associated with the proscribed organisation Jamat-e-Islami (Jel)/Falah-e-Aam Trust (FAT).”
The order added that the decision to take over the management of these schools had been taken to safeguard the academic future of students enrolled in them.
The magistrates concerned or deputy commissioners should take all necessary steps, in consultation with the School Education Department, to ensure that the academic careers of the students enrolled in these schools are not affected in any manner.
