Jammu and Kashmir Police continued their rescue and relief operations on Sunday, the second day, after heavy snowfall disrupted normal life across rural areas of central and south Kashmir. Police personnel in Budgam and Shopian rescued multiple stranded individuals.
In Budgam district, Police evacuated two female patients requiring immediate medical attention from remote areas of Khansahib subdivision and promptly shifted them to the nearest hospital, officials said.
In another incident in Heerpora, Shopian, a man removing snow from his rooftop was buried and trapped under a pile of snow. A patrolling police team quickly launched a rescue operation and saved his life, averting a potential tragedy.
The Union Territory received massive snowfall on Friday, with the Meteorological Department in Srinagar reporting accumulations of 1.5 to 4.6 feet in various parts of the Valley. The heavy snowfall, coming after months of prolonged dry spell, has effectively ended the drought-like conditions and provided much-needed relief to the local farming community, which relies on winter precipitation for water recharge. However, it has also caused significant problems for populations in rural and remote areas, leading to widespread power disruptions and suspension of commercial and transport activities.
Authorities on Sunday suspended rail operations on the Baramulla–Banihal section of the Kashmir Valley railway line due to adverse and slippery conditions. Intermittent snowfall continued in several stretches between Baramulla and Banihal stations, rendering train services out of operation for the day.
The police and other emergency services remain on high alert, with ongoing efforts to reach stranded individuals and restore essential connectivity in affected areas.
