Police on Monday ordered an inquiry after a video surfaced purportedly showing a police officer kicking a woman protester.

Police on Monday initiated an inquiry after a video surfaced on social media purportedly showing a police officer kicking a woman protester in Kulgam district. The incident, which took place on Sunday, has sparked widespread criticism and demands for accountability.

Kashmir Zone Police acknowledged the video in a post on X, stating that they have taken cognizance of the incident and the allegations regarding the officer's conduct. The statement further confirmed that the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the South Kashmir Range (SKR) has been tasked with investigating the matter and submitting a report within 10 days.

The controversy gained further traction after PDP leader Iltija Mufti condemned the officer’s behavior and called for a thorough probe. In a post on X, Mufti expressed outrage, describing the incident as shocking and inappropriate. She criticised the officer's actions, emphasising that the woman had been peacefully protesting against the mysterious deaths in Devsar, Kulgam.

Mufti further stated that such high-handed behavior from law enforcement officers, who are expected to uphold the law, only deepens mistrust and alienates the public. The protests in Kulgam erupted on Sunday following the discovery of a youth’s body in a water body. The deceased was one of three individuals who had gone missing last month.

Three days earlier, his brother’s body had been recovered from the same stream, intensifying public outrage and calls for a transparent investigation. Meanwhile, a search operation remains underway to locate the third missing person.
