In a move to enhance police services for the public, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered their first-ever e-FIR through WhatsApp following a complaint lodged at Pattan Police Station on 28 February 2025.

The complaint was filed by a resident of Bemina, Srinagar (name withheld), a government employee in the Horticulture Department, against the accused Shakeel-Ur-Rehman, who is also a government employee in the same department.

The complainant has accused him of sexual harassment, attempted rape, and criminal intimidation.

After examining the complaint, the police took cognisance of the matter and registered an e-FIR under Case FIR No. 30/2025 under the relevant sections of law at Police Station Pattan. The investigation is currently underway, police said.

Earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir Police had registered their first-ever electronic FIR against a North Kashmir resident from Handwara on 22 February 2025.

The complainant, Imtiyaz Ahmad Dar, son of Mohd Assadullah Dar of Hanjipora in Kupwara, a driver of SRTC bus no. JK01Y-1121, alleged he was restrained and physically assaulted by two persons.

Police stated that the driver was travelling from Tarathpora to Srinagar when the duo, Ashiq Hussain Bhat and Gowher Ahmad Bhat, sons of Samad Bhat of Shehnipora, Vilgam, reportedly inflicted physical injuries on him during the altercation.

In response to the complaint, Police Station Vilgam swiftly registered the e-FIR, marked as FIR No. 09/2025 under Sections 115(2) and 126(2) of the BNS at Police Station Vilgam Handwara, an official said.

“This landmark step highlights the growing integration of technology within law enforcement systems, setting a precedent for faster and more accessible justice delivery mechanisms in the region,” a police official stated.

Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered over 70 FIRs based on electronically submitted complaints.

This system provides citizens with multiple ways to report grievances, in addition to traditional methods such as in-person visits, phone calls, and written complaints.

According to police data, 52 complaints were received via SMS and email, 64 were lodged at Citizen Service Centres, and 10 were submitted through the web portal or e-forms as of 1 March 2025.
