J&K's senior IPS officer Mukesh Singh is Ladakh's new DGP

Senior IPS officer Mukesh Singh who has been appointed as DGP Ladakh


Senior Indian Police Service officer Mukesh Singh on Friday assumed charge as the Director General of Police of Ladakh. He succeeds Dr. S.D. Singh Jamwal and brings experience from central deputation to his new role, focusing on enhancing security and governance in the region.

 

A 1996-batch officer of the AGMUT cadre, Singh formally took over the post in the afternoon amid ongoing efforts to strengthen law enforcement, border management and internal security in the strategically significant region.Soon after assuming office on January 16, 2026, following he made a courtesy call on Lt. Governor Kavinder Gupta.

 

Singh brings with him extensive policing experience, having served in several key positions across Jammu and Kashmir and central armed police forces. His previous assignments include Additional Director General in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Additional Director General Jammu, Inspector General ITBP, Inspector General Jammu, Inspector General Crime Jammu and Kashmir, and Inspector General with the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

 

During his career, he has also served as Senior Superintendent of Police in multiple districts of Jammu and Kashmir, where he handled law and order, counter-insurgency operations and crime control during difficult periods.Senior officials said Singh’s expertise in border security, internal security and criminal investigations is expected to further strengthen the functioning of the Ladakh Police, given the region’s unique geographical and security challenges. The Ladakh Police welcomed his appointment, expressing confidence that his leadership would enhance professionalism and operational efficiency within the force.

 

An IIT Delhi graduate in civil engineering, Singh was part of the core team that helped establish the NIA and later served the agency as Superintendent of Police, Deputy Inspector General and Inspector General, handling several high-profile cases. He has authored the book Police Operations and co-published multiple research papers related to policing and counter-terrorism.Mukesh Singh has also served as Senior Superintendent of Police in various districts of Jammu and Kashmir, where he handled law and order, counter-insurgency operations and crime management during challenging phases.

 

His extensive experience in border security, internal security and criminal investigation is expected to strengthen the overall functioning of Ladakh Police, particularly given the region’s strategic importance and unique geographical challenges.

The Ladakh Police fraternity welcomed the new DGP, expressing confidence that his leadership would further enhance professionalism, coordination and operational efficiency across the force.
