Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday said Jammu and Kashmir was among the top states and Union Territories (UTs) in health infrastructure, with both private and public hospitals playing a key role in the transformation.

Speaking at the inauguration of Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital in Srinagar, Sinha said J&K figured in the top list of regions which are leading in terms of health infrastructure development.

“Before 2019, the region had only four medical colleges. Today, there are 11 medical colleges, two AIIMS, and an extensive Indian System of Medicine network,” he said.

LG Sinha added that “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s universal health coverage has guaranteed health insurance of Rs 5 lakh for every citizen of J&K.”

Jammu and Kashmir had better healthcare and a doctor-patient ratio even when it was an erstwhile state, he said. The UT has always had better health infrastructure, though the recent transformative development has elevated the services being offered at traditionally less hygienic public hospitals.

The digitisation of records and better public facilities, a blend of modern systems in the traditional setup, are bringing results as government-run hospitals in Jammu and Kashmir are always considered reliable.

Sinha stressed the expansion of infrastructure with new super-speciality hospitals, private facilities, and additional colleges across both Jammu and Kashmir divisions.

The neonatal mortality rate has come down to 9.8, while the infant mortality rate has come down to 16.3 per 1,000 live births, a significant improvement over past rates.
