Jammu and Kashmir is likely to receive heavy snowfall in the next 48 hours, ending a prolonged dry spell that has exacerbated the hardships of the local population in the plains, according to the Meteorological office in Srinagar.
Director MeT, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, predicted dry weather until January 18, with the possibility of fresh snowfall over widespread higher reaches. The weather pattern is likely to witness a change on January 19, with fair chances of moderate to heavy rain and snowfall at scattered to fairly widespread places across the UT.
Further, he said, the cloudy weather is likely to continue after January 20, with slight chances of rain and snowfall on January 21 across the higher reaches.
The weather pattern is expected to change significantly after January 22, with the highest chances of light to moderate rain and snowfall across the majority of the weather stations. On January 23 and 24, there are chances of heavy rain and snowfall over parts of the Chenab Valley, Pir Panjal mountain ranges, and parts of south Kashmir during the same period, with the subsequent occurrence of light snowfall on January 26.
According to the latest advisory issued by the MeT office, Srinagar, travellers are advised to plan their journeys carefully, especially on January 23 and 24, when the chances of heavy snowfall are at their maximum.
Meanwhile, on Friday, fresh snowfall was reported across widespread parts of the higher reaches, including famous tourist destinations. The officials said that the majority of the higher reaches, Gurez, Drass, Zojila, Gulmarg, along with Sonamarg and Doodpathri, received light snowfall.
