Following the arrival of the much anticipated transcontinental migration of migratory birds to Kashmir Valley taking place every winter, the Department of Wildlife Protection has barred the entry of people into the wetlands without proper permission.
The department, in its effort to provide safer shelter to these arriving guests, has issued a notice that says that migratory birds will inhabit and move between the wetlands during the winter months, and to ensure their safety and protection, it has decided to ban the individuals from entering the wetlands.
Furthermore, it said, “Some individuals with ill intentions attempt to harm the birds or disrupt their habitats, and to ensure the safety of the birds, nobody will be allowed to enter the wetlands without seeking prior permission.
Additionally, the authorities said that anyone found entering the wetlands without permission would be considered in violation of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and added, “Strict action will be taken against the violator under the provisions of the Act.”
“The Department of Wildlife Protection informs the general public that migratory birds from various parts of the world have begun arriving at the wetlands of Kashmir. These birds will inhabit and move between the wetlands during the winter months.”
Apart from the locals, the department has also asked bird watchers and researchers to seek permission before entering into these protected wetlands.
This measure helps the department identify legitimate visitors; or anyone found entering the wetlands without permission will be considered in violation of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and strict action will be taken against them under the provisions of the Act,” the advisory reads.
On several previous occasions, the authorities had initiated strict action and even arrested people for illegal hunting. However, this year, with administrative help, the department has proactively started its efforts to make wetlands in Kashmir a safe haven for the incoming birds.
