J’khand Excise Police recruitment halted after 12 deaths

The Jharkhand government will halt the recruitment process of Excise Police constables for three days after the death of 12 aspirants from various centres in the past few days.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren today said that the untimely death of the participants during the race in the recruitment process of excise constable is sad and heartbreaking. As a precaution, we have instructed officials to postpone this recruitment process for the next 3 days.

He said that the race will now not be organised after 9 am in any case. There will be adequate arrangements of doctors for those candidates who feel the need for a health test before the race and there will be arrangements of breakfast/fruits for the participants at all the competition venues so that no one participates in the race on an empty stomach.

Soren further said that while directing an immediate review of the rules made by the previous government, we have instructed to make changes in the rules for all future recruitments of this type, along with this, instructions have also been given to propose to provide immediate relief from the government to the unfortunately affected and bereaved family in this process.

Meanwhile, Assam CM and state BJP election co-in-charge for Jharkhand Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that BJP will assist Rs 1 lakh each to the families of the candidates who died in the excise constable tests.

He said that BJP will approach the Human Rights Commission to investigate the deaths during the tests. He also demanded that the state government should give Rs 50 lakh compensation and government jobs to the families of all the deceased youth.

Notably, 12 aspirants so far have lost their lives while trying to pass the physical tests for selection in the Excise police recruitment test.

The test involves running 10 kilometres in extremely hot and humid conditions, which is suspected to be a possible reason for extreme fatigue and dehydration that might have led to the death of the candidates.

Reports suggest that more than 100 other candidates had collapsed and had to be hospitalized during the physical tests at different centres of the physical tests being conducted across the State.

Doctors are investigating whether some candidates may have taken performance-enhancing drugs or energy drinks, which could have led to breathing difficulties or heart attacks. The intense heat and prolonged standing in queues are also being considered as possible factors contributing to these tragic events.
