The Jabalpur Railway Division has made significant strides in digitisation by introducing QR codes at the reservation and unreserved ticket counters across all its stations, allowing passengers to make digital payments for their tickets.
Following the directives of Divisional Railway Manager Kamal Kumar Talreja and Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Dr Madhur Verma, the initiative has been implemented at stations including Jabalpur, Madan Mahal, Katni, Narsinghpur, Gadarwara, Pipariya, Satna, Maihar, Rewa, Damoh, and Sagar.
This digital payment system aims to address challenges such as managing loose change and reducing long queues at ticket counters, ensuring quicker transactions and enhanced convenience for passengers.
Additionally, 113 Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) have been installed at 25 major stations. These machines also support digital payments, further minimising the need for passengers to wait in line.
The initiative has extended to parcel offices at nine stations, where QR codes have been displayed to facilitate digital payments.
The move has been well-received by passengers, many of whom have expressed appreciation for the convenience it provides.
Dr Madhur Verma, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, encouraged passengers to take full advantage of the new system.
He said, "With the introduction of QR codes, time spent on handling physical tickets and issues related to miscommunication over payments have been eliminated. Digital payments have accelerated transactions, resulting in an increase in ticket bookings. Initiatives like the UTS app and ATVMs have significantly reduced the crowds at unreserved ticket counters."
Verma also thanked Western Railway for introducing the QR code system and acknowledged the efforts of officials like Talreja in facilitating the implementation of reserved ticket payments.
Mahant Vijay Acharya, a passenger from Maharashtra returning from the Kumbh Mela, expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwani Vaishnav for the initiative. He highlighted that this step aligns with the Digital India Mission.
"QR codes have been installed at all counters, including ticketing and parcel counters, making it easier for anyone to make payments digitally. This eliminates the need to carry change and resolves disputes over payment discrepancies. The system is simple and accessible, as most people now have smartphones," Mahant Vijay Acharya said.
"Passengers can also avail themselves of a 25 per cent cashback on bookings, encouraging further adoption of digital transactions. This initiative is a positive move towards promoting a cashless economy," he added.
The Jabalpur Railway Division’s QR code-based payment system is not only simplifying transactions but also advancing the government’s vision of a digitally empowered India. Both passengers and officials have praised the initiative for its potential to improve the overall travel experience.
