Jailed former Chief Minister of Jharkhand Hemant Soren will now read the Constitution of India along with a couple of other books on the economy and Jharkhand movement while spending his time under judicial custody in Birsa Munda Central Jail.
Soren has asked for three books – Constitution of India by Durga Das Basu, ‘Jharkhand Andolan Ka Dastawej: Shoshan Sangharsh aur Shahadat’ by Anuj Kumar Sinha, and ‘Poor Economics’ by Abhijit V Banerjee and Esther Duflo -- to read in jail. Soren’s wife, Kalpana Soren, took the books to the jail on Sunday.
Kalpana Soren posted on social media platform X that Hemant has asked for books to read, and she will provide the books to him. She said that earlier Hemant had also asked for books related to the Jharkhand movement, Mundari, Ho and Kurukh languages, among others.
Kalpana said that Hemant is fond of reading books. He keeps his books at home with great love. Along with other books, he has always read books related to Jharkhand and the Jharkhand movement with special interest. After taking over the reins of the state, he had appealed to all the people who met him to give 'books, not bouquets'. And, he received thousands of books in the four years of his reign.
Kalpana further said that it was Hemant's dream that the state should move forward in the field of education.
Notably, Hemant Soren is presently in judicial custody after being arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on charges of money laundering and forceful grabbing of a land plot measuring 8.5 acres in a posh area of Jharkhand’s capital Ranchi.
