Mukhtar Ansari, a former gangster-turned-politician, passed away due to a cardiac arrest at a hospital in Banda, Uttar Pradesh.

 

Following his demise, prohibitory orders under section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which prohibits large gatherings, were enforced across various districts in the state, including Banda, Mau, Ghazipur, and Varanasi, with additional security personnel deployed.

 

Ansari was transferred to Rani Durgavati Medical College in Banda from the district jail while in an unconscious state. According to the hospital's principal, Suneel Kaushal, Ansari was pronounced dead at the hospital due to cardiac arrest.

 

Earlier, Ansari's brother, Afzal Ansari, had alleged that Mukhtar Ansari was being slowly poisoned in jail, a claim refuted by authorities. 

 

Mukhtar Ansari, aged 63, had a significant criminal record, with over 60 pending cases against him. He had been serving time in jails in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab since 2005 and had faced sentencing in eight cases since September 2022 by various courts in Uttar Pradesh. 

 

He was imprisoned in the Banda jail and was included in the list of 66 gangsters issued by Uttar Pradesh Police the previous year.

 

Prashant Kumar, the Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh, announced imposing prohibitory orders under section 144 of the CrPC throughout the state. Teams comprising the Central Reserve Police Force, in collaboration with local police units, were deployed in Banda, Mau, Ghazipur, and Varanasi.

Mukhtar Ansari, a native of Mau, was known to wield significant influence in the adjoining districts of Ghazipur and Varanasi as well.

 

According to a medical bulletin, Ansari was admitted to the medical college at approximately 8:25 pm on Thursday after complaining of vomiting and being found unconscious. Despite the efforts of a team of nine doctors attending to him, he succumbed to cardiac arrest, as stated in the bulletin.

The Samajwadi Party expressed its condolences over Ansari's demise.

 

"Sad demise of former MLA Shri Mukhtar Ansari. May his soul rest in peace. May the bereaved family members get the strength to bear this immense loss. Humble tribute," the party said in a post in Hindi on X.
