Khalistani preacher and Khadoor Sahib MP from Punjab, Amritpal Singh, who is currently lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh jail will be launching his political party on January 14. He is booked under the National Security Act (NSA).
The announcement is set to take place during the 'Panth Bachao, Punjab Bachao' rally during the 'Maghi Da Mela' in Sri Muktsar Sahib.
Singh took oath as a Lok Sabha MP on July 5, 2024, entering the Parliament as an Independent.
Meanwhile, in September 2024 while addressing the media, Amritpal's father Tarsem Singh hinted at and expressed a desire to launch their own political party.
"The party will be for the welfare of all and will follow the principle of ‘manas ki jaat sabhay eke pechanbo’ (equality of mankind),” he said on the fourth foundation day of Amritpal’s organisation, Waris Punjab De.
A look at the background:
In the year 2022, Amritpal was appointed head of the Punjabi political group ‘Waris Punjab De’. During his leadership, he voiced pro-Khalistani sentiments in his speeches.
He was also implicated in the Ajnala police station attack, in which armed men assaulted police officers following the arrest of one of their aides.
On September 29, 2021, Sandeep Singh Sidhu, popularly known as Deep Sidhu, announced the formation of Waris Punjab De, describing it as a pressure group that aspired to protect and fight for the rights of Punjab while raising key social issues.
The organisation played an active role in the 2020–2021 Indian farmers' protest under Sidhu's leadership.
Amritpal Singh took over the reins of the organisation after the death of Deep Sidhu, who died in an accident.
Indian authorities on March 18, 2023, initiated a manhunt for Singh, following accusations of attempted murder, obstruction of law enforcement, and inciting "disharmony" within society.
During the search, authorities deployed thousands of paramilitary officers and imposed restrictions on internet and mobile messaging services, affecting nearly 30 million people across Punjab.
